Socrates
Today in my portrait class my professor was joking with our model that he looked like a philosopher. I said that he was Socrates, and I tried to change his t-shirt into robes, but I ran out of paper before I could make it look convincing. Oh well. At least I'm getting better at drawing. A little bit.

Happy Early Halloween
So my university does an annual Halloween art show (Halloween is a big deal at my school, they even teach a semester long class every Fall that is just about Halloween), and I really, REALLY wanted to be a part of it this year since, well, I'm an art major, and I've never actually been in a show before. I always say next time, and then next time never happens. But I decided to actually do it this time around, and here's my finished piece. (I don't think I need to apologize for the photo/quality of said photo, since I do that every time I submit something).

It's not really what I wanted to do. I wanted to do something more original and in depth, but I just did not have time this last month to do anything (schoolwork is really getting to me this semester), and so this is all I could hurriedly whip up over the last weekend before pieces were due. It still might get rejected, I don't know what the framing guidelines were, and this is actually the first time I have ever framed anything I have ever made before-ever. They have an "Artist Materials and Methods" class, I think I'm going to have to take it desperately at some point. I want to be an artist, but I have no idea how to do it. C'est la vie.

But anyway, despite being a rush job, I thought it looked more or less nice, and since it's been a while, I thought I'd share it.

Also, if anybody has any tips on how to improve paper art, I'd love to hear it!

Look Ma, I Made an Oil Painting!
So this is the first time that I've done a painting outside of my oil painting class and without the aid of my teacher. Also my first time painting a human. After having some childhood closure with Samurai Jack I wanted to do something Japanese (I thought she was a Geisha but I think she might be a Maiko, a Geisha in training. Anybody know for sure?), and I thought, since her skin would be white, that it would be easy. BOY WAS I SO WRONG. SO WRONG. The hair pieces nearly killed me. And I just couldn't make the kimono convincing to save my life. In the end, I just had to wash my hands of it (I've been working on her for over a month). I might still do some tweaking, like her nose I think may be a little broken-looking, and the border is so crooked (I flipped the picture and yikes, it is soooo crooked. That needs to be fixed), but I will save that for another day.

I wanted the border to be white initially, but I was reusing an old canvas sheet and, there would have been the right size for it, but it was dirty, so I used the black to cover it up.

It's not as good as I hoped, but it's better than I expected, and I am tired, but I am pleased. Gives me hope that my next will be even better. Anybody have any thoughts or comments? Any hints on how to improve? I appreciate critique (and I think it's silly here on DA that you have to "request" critique).

My "Newest Deviation" spot on my profile looks so nice with all of those mature content filters.... :p
So, I've become a fan of :iconsolarsands: and his youtube series "Browsing DeviantArt," and I've decided to start taking up his challenge by offering real constructive criticism to other artists here on DA. I know I am just a beginner myself, but I feel like not enough people leave real criticism (without having to "request" a critique, which I think is silly) and help each other improve, and I feel like anybody can criticize, because even an amateur chef can tell when something doesn't taste good and could use work. (And let's be honest, saying "Man this sucks" or "OMG THIS IS SO KAWAII I LUFF IT SO MUCH!" doesn't really count as 'Constructive Criticism')

I'm trying to be as helpful and honest as I can, and I hope I'm not offending anybody, I just know we all can improve, and I'd like to see our community improve.

If anybody sees any of my work and would like to offer criticism, please do! I know I have a long way to go and am trying to improve in whatever way I can. I know some things I need to work on already, but some insight from other artists would be most helpful and welcome!
